Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: A Revolutionary Approach to Treating Mental Illness and other Brain Conditions”

Presented By: David Feilel, M.D., Ph.D.

Overview:
Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is an exciting, new a non-invasive approach to treating psychiatric and other brain disorders. It works by stimulating abnormally functioning parts of the brain with magnet pulses. The FDA approved the first rTMS device in 2008 for depression that does not respond to medication and recently a more advanced TMS device, developed in Israel was approved by the FDA. Studies have shown that in addition to depression, TMS can be effective for bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease and several other brain conditions.

Goals and Objectives:
1) Understand the principle behind TMS therapy

2) Become familiar with the evidence supporting TMS to treat.

3) Be familiar with the potential non-clinical uses of TMS therapy.
