Complimentary brunch, networking and socializing from 10 - 11:00 a.m. Presentations from 11 - 1:00.
Hear emerging clinicians in pre-licensed practice discuss their observations of the field.
The symposium will be moderated by a panel of senior clinicians who will facilitate an invigorating discussion. 2 CEUs provided - free to members, $20 to nonmembers.
Topic: Toward a Sex Positive Perspective in Social Work | Heather Woodford, ASW
Description: This presentation aims to provide attendees with a sex positive perspective on working with clients. The presenter will provide insight from her own professional work in this arena. The talk will provide foundational non-stigmatizing terms for use with clients whose sexual and relationship practices do not conform to cultural norms - such as BDSM/kink, LGBTQIAA people, and consensual non-monogamy. The presenter will provide community, informational, and academic resources for further professional learning, and client referral.
Topic: Mental Health Issues in Foster and Adopted Children | Diane Miller
Learning Objectives:
- To explore factors that can cause children to come into the child welfare system, and how these factors play a part in possible mental health issues for these children.
- Examining quality of care for children in the child welfare system, and the adjustment or lack thereof, of children to a new living environment.
- Identifying treatment modalities that have been proven to be most effective when working with children in the child welfare system.
- Taking a closer look at permanency for children in the child welfare system. Identifying issues adoptive families face when adopting a child, and long term effects on children who have been permanently removed from their family of origin and adopted.
Bio:
I have worked in child welfare as a trainer and a social worker for the last 15 years.Ii am also a foster/adopt parent of five children. Having experienced foster care and adoption issues from both perspectives, has given me a unique understanding of the challenges faced by caregivers, and more importantly children who enter into the child welfare system.
