PRESENTATION SUMMARY: Dr. Smith will review the history and current understanding of schizophrenia for a non-medical audience. The historical conception of schizophrenia as an illness and the relevant terminology will be covered first. Major clusters and their neurobiological correlates will be reviewed. Dr. Smith will then touch on understanding the etiology and the course of the illness. Special focus will be on the current medication treatments.
