District: Fresno

Presenter: Tony Yamamoto, LCSW

Description: The presentation will address two unique specialties of social work practice: medical social work and school social work. The clinical practices are shaped by the organizational setting and the mission of the organization. In comparing the two practices, there will be a comparison between the two settings and a contrast to practice in a community mental health setting. Typically, the approach is solution focused and brief. The intent is not to address the intra psychic tension and problems of the client. The emphasis is on working on the “person in environment”. The social worker works with the macro and meta systems. Case management and casework are integral to this approach.

Objectives:
  1. To provide a brief overview of clinical social work in a health care and school setting
  2. The attendees will be able to speak about the role of social workers in these two different settings.
  3. The attendees will have an enhanced knowledge about the clinical practice of these two settings
  4. The attendees will be able to differentiate the clinical practices of an outside therapist and the clinical practice of a health care social worker and school social worker.
