 DESCRIPTION

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a truly integrative and effective approach to treating the kind of complex, developmental trauma we see with so many of our patients. Over the last decade, EMDR has begun to receive positive attention from traditional therapists thanks to the publication of books like Bessel Van der Kolk’s The Body Keeps the Score.

Once thought of as a fairly radical, even bizarre treatment for single incident “Large T” trauma (like rape, war, earthquakes, etc), EMDR is now known to greatly decrease the disturbance of the kind of repetitive “small t” developmental trauma we clinical social workers see so frequently and find so hard to resolve. While not a magic bullet, EMDR does seem to improve the lives of many patients significantly.

Attendees will learn the fundamentals of EMDR and gain an understanding of who in their practice might benefit. We will discuss Resourcing, a powerful preparatory phase of the EMDR process. Finally, a case presentation will further illustrate the process of how adjunctive EMDR therapy looks in practice.

 LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Attendees will receive a basic understanding of the EMDR process.
  2. Attendees will have a sense of which patients, and at what juncture in their treatment, could benefit from adjunctive EMDR (Hint: not only the obviously traumatized ones but also the ones who just seem really stuck, for many years.)
  3. Attendees will understand the benefits of EMDR Resourcing, and how the process of resourcing carries over from the adjunctive EMDR sessions into their treatments with patients.
